Trump Links Canadian Wildfire Smoke to Air Alerts in Dozen States

President Trump said smoke from Canadian wildfires has poisoned air across more than a dozen U.S. states and threatened additional tariffs on Canada. Trump made the comments after attending the World Cup final on Sunday and later posted on Truth Social that Canada has refused to engage in basic forest management and debris removal.

Congress from Michigan sent a joint letter to Canadian officials expressing frustration with the handling of the fires and said the United States would explore direct involvement in cross-border fuel reduction. One of the lawmakers also said a bill would be sent to the president that would impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada to fund a victim compensation fund and cleanup costs.

Ontario officials called the criticism unacceptable and noted that Canada has previously assisted the United States with wildfire response. A Canadian emergency management official said the country has invested $12 billion in forest sustainability and fire prevention since 2020, while warmer and drier weather has increased wildfire risk.

Over 100 million Americans were under air quality alerts as the smoke blanketed parts of the country. Officials warned residents in affected states to stay indoors or wear masks. The Canadian Wildland Fire Information System reported hundreds of active fires, with new ones continuing to appear.

A combination of heat, drought, dry vegetation, human error, and lightning strikes caused the blazes.
