President Trump said he will nominate Todd Blanche to serve as attorney general. Blanche has been acting attorney general since April after Trump fired Pam Bondi. Trump made the announcement during a White House dinner on Wednesday.

A video of the event was posted to social media by White House deputy chief of staff Dan Scavino. " The president told the New York Post's Miranda Devine in an interview on Tuesday that he thought Blanche would be the permanent attorney general. "We put him as acting, and he's done a very good job," Trump said.

He added that he didn't have any other candidates in mind for the role. Blanche previously represented Trump in private legal matters before joining the Justice Department. As acting attorney general, Blanche has overseen the department alongside the deputy attorney general.

Blanche was confirmed last year as deputy attorney general in a party-line 52-46 Senate vote. The Senate will need to confirm Blanche for the permanent attorney general position. Earlier this week, Blanche told members of Congress the department is "not moving forward" with the $776 billion "anti-weaponization fund" for people who allege they were victims of government persecution, following a court ruling that temporarily blocked the Justice Department from implementing it.

A separate portion of the settlement that promised not to audit any of Mr. Trump's previous tax returns still appears to be intact. Blanche has denied allegations that related charges against former FBI Director James Comey were politically motivated.

He told CBS News last month the case was spearheaded by "local prosecutors" and "local agents" in North Carolina. Comey was previously charged on separate allegations last year, along with New York Attorney General Letitia James, but those charges were tossed out after a judge determined the prosecutor was invalidly appointed.
