President Trump spoke for half an hour at Mount Rushmore on Friday night, framing progressive Democrats as a resurgent communist threat and pledging to send supporters into exile. He urged Congress to end the filibuster and pass the Save America Act ahead of November midterms.

The president spoke for half an hour to an overwhelmingly white crowd that chanted “USA! ” and was briefly interrupted by a flyover of F-16 jets. “You can be loyal to Karl Marx or you can be loyal to America,” he said. “You can be a communist or you can be a patriot.
” The president also urged Congress to terminate the filibuster and pass the Save America Act, stating that doing so would prevent his party from losing an election for 100 years.
The speech came hours after New York’s mayor delivered a pro-immigrant address viewed as a rebuke of Trump’s movement, and days after four progressive candidates, including three democratic socialists, won Democratic primaries in New York, Colorado and other states.
Trump spoke in the Black Hills, land the U.S. government seized from the Sioux Nation in 1877 after Congress forced the tribe to cede territory guaranteed by treaty. Critics have said the address weaponized the semiquincentennial by promoting a narrative centered on white Christian men while ignoring that Washington and Jefferson were slaveholders.
Trump is scheduled to address another crowd on Saturday at the National Mall before a fireworks display, as a heatwave disrupts Independence Day celebrations across the country. His approval ratings remain near historic lows.
