President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social overnight July 4-5 that over 273 Americans have been shot in Chicago since the war in Iran began. The Washington Times reported the post was made shortly after the July 4 fireworks display on the National Mall. The Chicago Police Department reported 678 shootings from January through June 2026, a 3 percent increase from the same period in 2025.
Murders totaled 208 in that span, up 5 percent from 2025. Shootings have fallen 37 percent and murders 24 percent since 2024. The United States and Iran are in a 60-day negotiating period after a fragile ceasefire.
The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February 2026. Since then, 13 American personnel have been killed and hundreds injured. Israeli officials have said they have no intention of abiding by an agreement that they had no say in crafting.
U.S. and Iranian officials lobbed strikes at each other over the Strait of Hormuz while Israel carried out assaults on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.
