President Donald Trump said Sunday that Keir Starmer will resign as prime minister of the United Kingdom. Trump stated that Starmer failed badly on immigration and energy, adding that the country should open North Sea oil fields. The post came the same day reports indicated Starmer must decide whether to step down or face a leadership challenge from Andy Burnham.
Burnham is scheduled to be sworn into the House of Commons on Monday after winning a special election the previous week. Starmer led the Labour Party to a landslide victory in July 2024. Pressure on his leadership has built over months as the party’s popularity declined amid struggles to deliver economic growth and public service improvements.
Trump also said, “This is not Winston Churchill we’re dealing with,” in reference to Starmer. The two leaders have clashed repeatedly over the conflict in Iran, including Britain’s decision not to join the military operation. The Washington Times reported that Starmer has publicly vowed to remain as prime minister.
Trump described the United Kingdom as a once-great ally in the same post. Starmer appointed Peter Mandelson as British ambassador to the United States. Mandelson resigned over ties to Jeffrey Epstein and was arrested in February on allegations of leaking confidential information to him.
