Trump Proposes 100% Tariffs on French Wine Over Digital Tax
President Trump said he would impose 100% tariffs on French wines and champagnes unless France removes its 3% digital services tax on U.S. tech companies. The warning came ahead of the G7 summit scheduled for Monday in Évian-les-Bains, France.
BenzingaIn an interview with the New York Post published Monday, Trump said, “I asked him not to charge American companies, and if they do, I have no choice but to charge a 100% tariff on all champagnes and all wines coming out of France.” The tax applies to local revenue generated by major U.S. technology firms including Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, and Meta.
Trump previously warned of 200% tariffs on French wines and champagnes earlier this year after Macron declined to join a Gaza initiative. In October, French lawmakers voted to double the tax to 6% and narrow its scope to the largest global firms, but the measure was later vetoed.
The tariff warning precedes the G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains on Monday. France holds the G7 presidency in 2026. The agenda includes discussions on Ukraine, AI policy, and developing-nation debt, with participation from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
