Trump Requests Short-Term FISA 702 Extension to Allow Confirmation of New DNI
President Trump asked Congress Wednesday for a short-term extension of Section 702 surveillance authority while he selects a permanent director of national intelligence to replace acting Director Bill Pulte.
Washington ExaminerPresident Donald Trump asked Congress on Wednesday to pass a short-term extension of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to provide time for the selection and confirmation of a permanent director of national intelligence. The current authority is set to expire this week.
Trump named William Pulte as acting director of national intelligence last week, with Pulte scheduled to assume the role on June 19.
” The president met with House Speaker Mike Johnson multiple times this week, including Wednesday morning, to discuss a legislative path forward. White House officials did not respond to questions about the timeline for naming Pulte’s successor.
Pulte has been directed to downsize the Office of the Director of National Intelligence by returning staff to their home agencies. Senators have withheld support for a clean extension pending Trump’s nomination of Pulte’s replacement. Pulte has no prior intelligence community experience.
