White House official Kurt Olsen is spearheading broader efforts to re-investigate 2020 election results, and political commentator John Solomon joined the White House last month to assist with document review and declassification. Acting Director of National Intelligence Bill Pulte has coordinated with CIA Director John Ratcliffe on the effort.
Pulte received authority to unilaterally declassify information without approval from other agencies.
Intelligence agencies and the FBI prepared documents based on National Security Agency intercepts showing that China, Russia and other adversaries sought to collect information on U.S. voters and voting systems. No documents are expected to show that any breaches compromised election results.
A 2021 ODNI report concluded there was no indication that any foreign actor attempted to alter any technical aspect of the 2020 voting process. The same report stated that China did not deploy interference efforts intended to change the outcome of the presidential election. CIA Director John Ratcliffe and FBI Director Kash Patel are expected to attend the address.
Patel ordered the FBI to surge personnel to investigate claims of voting irregularities in Georgia and other states. Audits in those states have not supported claims of fraud sufficient to have changed the 2020 results. Several state election officials, including from 2020 battleground states, will attend a dinner at Mount Rushmore on Thursday night during the National Association of Secretaries of State annual conference.
Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs said, “We’re very nervous, because we don’t know what he’s going to say. ” Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate said he hoped to tune out the speech and added that major changes to election processes cause more problems.
