President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet Senate Republicans for lunch on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, June 24. Sen. Rick Scott, R-Florida, who invited the president, sent colleagues a memo obtained by USA TODAY that called for vocal input on the best path forward.
Scott wrote that he hoped senators would hold robust conversations about how to spend time between now and the November elections. Trump told reporters during a visit to Pennsylvania that he wanted to discuss the SAVE America Act, a voting restrictions bill he has identified as a top priority.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, has said there are not enough votes to pass the measure, which would require documentary proof of citizenship to vote.
Thune added that there are not enough Republicans willing to end the filibuster and that Democratic support is unlikely. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, said some Republicans are tired of recent squabbling.
Retiring Sen. Thom Tillis, R-North Carolina, said he wants to focus on positives that are being missed amid differences. Sen. John Kennedy, R-Louisiana, said he is looking forward to the meeting. Kennedy added that he has no idea what will happen and cannot predict the future.
