Trump and Xi Agree on Boeing Aircraft, Soybeans, Energy and Fentanyl Precursors at Beijing Summit
President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People and visited the Temple of Heaven and Zhongnanhai Garden during a two-day summit themed "Partners, not adversaries." Trump announced Chinese commitments to purchase Boeing aircraft, soybeans and energy while Xi warned that mishandling Taiwan could lead to clashes.
Fox NewsPresident Trump concluded a two-day visit to Beijing for a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14-15, 2026. The two leaders met at the Great Hall of the People on May 14 before visiting the Temple of Heaven that same day. On May 15 they toured the Zhongnanhai Garden.
Trump said China agreed to purchase 200 Boeing planes and expressed interest in buying as many as 750 once the first deliveries are completed. He added that China pledged to buy billions of dollars of soybeans and could begin buying oil from Texas, Louisiana and Alaska.
The White House readout of the meeting focused heavily on trade and said the two leaders pledged to work toward ending the flow of fentanyl precursors from China into the United States.
The White House readout did not mention Taiwan. The Chinese readout stated that if the Taiwan question is handled properly the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability; otherwise the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts. Trump said he “heard [Xi] out” on Taiwan and that Xi does not want to see a fight for independence because that would be a very strong confrontation.
“I made no commitment either way,” Trump stated regarding Taiwan.
A White House official stated that the U.S. position on Taiwan had not changed. The official said Trump is expected to decide soon whether to move forward with a new Taiwan arms package. The official noted that Trump approved more Taiwan arms sales during his first term than any previous president and that his first-year total in the second term exceeded the full amount approved during former President Biden’s four years in office.
One billion in arms sales to Taiwan occurred in December 2025.
The cases of jailed Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai and detained house-church pastor Ezra Jin were raised during the summit. Trump stated that Xi is “giving very serious consideration” to releasing Pastor Ezra Jin, also known as Ezra Jin Mingri. Trump stated that Jimmy Lai is “a tough one” for Xi to release.
Claire Lai commended Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio for their continuous commitment to freeing her father Jimmy Lai.
Trump stated that he and Xi did not discuss tariffs during the meetings. He said discussions about chips did not come up during the summit but that the two sides discussed the possibility of AI guardrails. Trump stated that Xi told him China would not provide military equipment to Tehran. He said both leaders agreed Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon.
Jimmy Lai is a British citizen, Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy activist jailed under Hong Kong’s national security law. Ezra Jin is a Chinese house-church pastor whose detention has drawn advocacy from his family and supporters in Washington.
