Trump and Sharif Announce Cease-Fire Deal, Set Signing for June 19 in Switzerland

thehindu.comU.S. President Donald Trump and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a 14-point memorandum of understanding early Monday that calls for an immediate and permanent end to military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon. Shehbaz Sharif wrote on X that both sides have declared the termination of hostilities and that the official signing ceremony will take place on Friday, June 19 in Switzerland.

Iran will reaffirm its commitment under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty not to develop nuclear weapons and will reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 30 days under terms set by Tehran. Iran’s missile program and support for its proxies have been removed from the agenda of the negotiations.
The United States will commit not to interfere in Iran’s internal affairs, will lift the naval blockade within 30 days, and will withdraw its forces from areas surrounding Iran.
The United States will also commit not to deploy additional forces to the region and not to impose new sanctions on Iran during the negotiations. The memorandum includes a suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil exports and a roughly $300 billion reconstruction plan for Iran to be presented by the United States and the mediating parties.
Following the signing on Friday, a 60-day negotiating period will begin with the goal of reaching a final agreement focused on Iran’s stockpile of enriched material, sanctions relief, and the reconstruction plan.
A special monitoring mechanism will be established to implement the agreement. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that the text of the memorandum had been approved with the guidance of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. The council stated that the war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, would end immediately and permanently, and that the formal signing will take place on Friday.
