President Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum on Friday that directs federal defense agencies to accelerate adoption of the most advanced commercial and open-source AI models for military missions. The memorandum requires rapid onboarding of AI systems from multiple vendors and adaptation of those tools for operational use.
It also bars any entity from disabling, degrading or modifying an AI system relied on by American warfighters without prior approval.
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth must issue an updated directive on autonomous weapon systems under the new framework. U.S. network of defense agencies cannot create or release an AI model designed to censor free speech, embed ideological bias or conduct unlawful surveillance against the American people.
