Trump Threatens 100% Tariff on Countries Imposing Digital Services Taxes

President Trump on Friday threatened to impose a 100% tariff on all goods from any country that enacts a digital services tax on U.S. companies. The warning appeared in a social media post that singled out European countries discussing such taxes. Trump stated the tariff would apply immediately and would override any previously negotiated trade deals.
Britain has maintained a 2% digital services tax since 2020 on revenues from search engines, social media platforms, and online marketplaces. The tax applies when global digital revenues exceed £500 million and more than £25 million comes from U.K. users.
A 2025 Treasury review showed the levy raised more than £800 million in 2024–25, an increase from £678 million the prior year. Officials said the tax ensures large multinational businesses contribute fairly to public services.
Trump issued a similar threat in April, saying tariffs could be imposed unless the U.K. reversed its digital services tax. The current warning precedes a July 4 deadline for the European Union and United States to begin implementing a tariff deal that caps most EU exports at 15%.
Digital services taxes were not included in that agreement and remain a point of contention. The U.S. government previously conducted tariff investigations on digital services taxes under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974.
