India's commerce ministry said the tariffs are not yet final and that the U.S. Trade Representative will accept public comments before any decision. Officials added that talks on a broader trade agreement are continuing.
India was among the first countries to begin trade talks with the United States last year. The two sides reached a framework for an interim deal in February, but a final agreement has not been reached. Trump also repeated earlier criticism of India's trade policies, saying the country had charged the United States high tariffs for years.
He noted that tariffs on some Indian goods had been reduced to 10 percent after an earlier U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
