President Donald Trump on July 16 urged Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification at polling places. In the White House address Trump revived claims that U.S. election systems are vulnerable to manipulation.
He announced the declassification of intelligence reports that he said would reveal flaws in those systems and stated that China carried out the largest compromise of U.S. election data in history by acquiring 220 million voter records. Trump also said more than 250,000 non-U.S.
Citizens were registered to vote in four states. He accused China of trying to “undermine my first administration and our 2020 campaign” and the U.S. intelligence community of covering up “shocking vulnerabilities” in the American election system.
The SAVE America Act has stalled in Congress amid bipartisan opposition. The declassified documents released in connection with the address largely discussed issues previously included in a 2021 U.S. intelligence community assessment, TheWrap reported.
