TSMC has signed a corporate power purchase agreement for 100 percent of the electricity from the Hai Long offshore wind project off Taiwan. The deal covers more than 1 gigawatt of capacity from three sites in the Taiwan Strait. The project began supplying power in 2025 and is scheduled for full operation by 2027.
Ars TechnicaTSMC has entered a 30-year corporate power purchase agreement to buy all electricity produced by the Hai Long offshore wind project. The agreement with Northland Power covers more than 1 gigawatt of power capacity from three offshore wind sites in the Taiwan Strait off the western coast of central Taiwan.
The project began supplying power to Taiwan’s grid in 2025 and is scheduled to become fully operational by 2027. Once completed, the wind farms would have the capacity to power the equivalent of more than 1 million Taiwanese households. The company said the move supports its operations during record demand for energy-intensive chip manufacturing driven by artificial intelligence growth.
Taiwan relies on natural gas plants to generate about half of its electricity and typically holds just two weeks of fuel reserves. In March 2026, Qatar shut down natural gas production after its facilities were damaged by Iranian drone strikes. Bloomberg reported that this caused Taiwan’s power grid to lose one-third of its usual supply of liquefied natural gas.
Reuters reported that these steps have so far prevented energy shortfalls. The developments follow broader global efforts to secure energy supplies after the war in the Middle East disrupted regional production and halted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
TSMC is among companies seeking renewable sources as demand for its chips rises. The 30-year agreement provides a long-term commitment to wind power as one part of addressing Taiwan’s energy needs.
