An armed group rammed a vehicle filled with explosives into the gate of a security compound in Bajaur district, northwest Pakistan, on May 12, 2026. The vehicle triggered a huge explosion at the Bajaur district camp, after which fighters rushed the camp and opened indiscriminate fire. Eight or nine Pakistani soldiers were killed in the Bajaur district attack.
At least 10 attackers were killed while about 35 security personnel were wounded, @AJEnglish reported. A Reuters journalist in Bajaur said the blast from the compound was felt at markets more than 20 kilometres away. Images from the scene showed that most of the outpost’s structures had been destroyed or charred by flames.
Pakistani military troops shut down nearby roads and surrounded the compound, which sits on the mountainous border with Afghanistan. The compound remained sealed off in the hours after the assault. The Pakistan Taliban, known as the TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack on the Bajaur security compound.
The TTP is based in Afghanistan and seeks to overthrow the Pakistani government. The latest assault forms part of a string of deadly incidents in the border region. A car bomb killed more than a dozen people targeting a police post in northwest Pakistan in recent days prior to May 15, 2026.
At least nine people were killed in an explosion at a market in northwest Pakistan in the same period. Three security personnel were wounded when a mortar shell landed inside a camp in Bajaur’s Inayat Killi area, officials said. The surge in violence comes as Islamabad and Kabul struggle to contain escalating border friction.
