Turkey and Azerbaijan intend to establish an electricity corridor linking Azerbaijan with southeast Europe, Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said Monday. "We are going to create the electricity version of TANAP," Bayraktar stated at the Baku Energy Week conference, referring to the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline that carries Azerbaijani gas to Europe via Turkey.

Turkey also plans to spend an estimated $30 billion over the next decade to upgrade its electricity transmission and distribution networks, the minister said. The proposed corridor could involve Georgia and Bulgaria as additional transit or destination countries, according to the statement reported by Reuters.

The announcement comes as both nations seek to expand existing energy cooperation beyond natural gas into cross-border electricity trade.
