The Kremlin said on July 10 that Russia was in contact with Turkey regarding the fate of Russian S-400 missile systems owned by Ankara. Al-Monitor reported that Turkish news outlet Hurriyet stated Turkey could announce the resale of the systems to an unnamed Gulf country as soon as that day to seek the removal of U.S. sanctions.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the reported transfer as an extremely sensitive issue. He added that Russia has maintained contact with the Turkish side on the matter and will continue to do so. The United States sanctioned Turkey in 2020 over its purchase of the S-400 systems and removed the NATO member from the F-35 fighter jet procurement and manufacturing program.
The S-400 systems are Russian-made surface-to-air missiles.
