TV Presenter Dermot Murnaghan Dies at 68 After Prostate Cancer

Dermot Murnaghan died on the morning of 11 July 2026 at his home in North London. He was 68. His family said in a statement that he passed away peacefully with his family at his side after an illness with prostate cancer.

Murnaghan had been diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer in 2025. He later became an advocate for men to get tested for the condition, stating that early detection is crucial. Murnaghan presented the ITV Evening News and the BBC News at Six and Ten.

He served as a main presenter of BBC Breakfast from September 2002 to December 2007 and hosted the quiz show Eggheads for 11 years starting in 2003. He started his career at Channel 4 News. He fronted ITV shows including The Big Story and the News at 10 from 1993 to 1997, and the channel's Evening News and Nightly News from 1999 to 2001.

Murnaghan moved to the BBC in 2002 and was one of the faces of Sky News from 2007 to 2023. Former colleague LisaatSky described him as a trusted journalist, irreverent, great fun and a great colleague. His family thanked the public for messages of goodwill received since his diagnosis and his campaigning to raise awareness for screening programmes.
