Twenty-two runners from seven countries completed a marathon at the North Pole on Thursday after arriving from Norway aboard the French polar vessel Le Commandant Charcot, The Independent reported. Denmark’s Rikke Dam won the women’s race in 6 hours, 54 minutes and 2 seconds.
China’s Shengxian Wang won the men’s race in 3 hours, 52 minutes and 22 seconds. The participants raced across drifting sea ice near the geographic pole, completing 40 laps of a 1,055-metre loop while wearing life vests and thermal layers.
Armed guards patrolled the course throughout the event to monitor for polar bears. The race took place on floating sea ice in near-freezing conditions, The Independent reported.
