Twin Earthquakes Kill 32 and Injure 700 in Central Venezuela

Two powerful earthquakes struck central Venezuela on Wednesday evening, killing at least 32 people and injuring 700. The first tremor measured magnitude 7.2 and hit about 160 km west of Caracas. Less than one minute later a magnitude 7.5 quake struck the same area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Dozens of buildings collapsed in Caracas and nearby cities, sending residents into the streets.

Venezuela's interim president declared a state of emergency in response to the damage. Officials said the twin quakes destroyed structures across multiple cities near the capital. At least 20 aftershocks were recorded after the main shocks. Rescue teams worked through the night to clear rubble and search for survivors.
