A spokesperson for the mayor reported two people seriously injured, while Bild cited at least eight injuries overall. Officials did not immediately specify whether the event was an accident or deliberate attack, per The New York Times.
Local broadcaster MDR, citing police, noted two severe injuries alongside the fatalities. Eyewitnesses told Radio Leipzig they saw several bodies covered with sheets and a stabbing amid the chaos. Video from Radio Leipzig showed a damaged Volkswagen SUV speeding through a pedestrian zone with a person on top of the vehicle.
Police expect casualty numbers to rise, according to Reuters. Leipzig police confirmed injuries from the driving car but provided no further initial details. In a separate incident, approximately 23 people were injured in a shooting at Arcadia Lake in Edmond, Oklahoma, during an unsanctioned lakeside party Sunday night.
The gathering, advertised on social media, drew a large crowd of young adults, police said. At least 10 people were taken to hospitals, according to authorities. The event unfolded at a campground near the lake.

Russian forces launched a missile strike on Merefa in Ukraine's Kharkiv region on Monday, killing five people and wounding at least 18. The attack damaged homes, businesses, and public buildings in the town, which lies far from front lines. Regional prosecutors indicated the use of an Iskander-type ballistic missile.
Moscow provided no immediate comment. Three people died and three fell ill from a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a Netherlands-based cruise ship in the southern Atlantic. The virus typically spreads through contact with urine or feces from infected rodents such as rats and mice, according to DW.
Hans Kluge, head of WHO Europe, stated that hantavirus presents a low risk to the public.
Police described the blast as suspicious and declared it a major incident, but stated it was not terror-related.
