Two East Midlands Railway Trains Collide in Bedford, Killing Driver and Injuring 89

Two trains operated by East Midlands Railway collided on Friday evening in Bedford, killing one driver and injuring 89 people. Nine of the injured remain in critical condition. A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said King Charles’s “thoughts and sympathies are with the family of the deceased and with all those injured or affected”.

The crash is the worst train accident in more than two decades. Investigators are examining why the Train Protection and Warning System did not stop the trains. The system was installed across the network after the Ladbroke Grove disaster killed 31 people in 1999 and is designed to halt trains automatically if they pass a red signal.

The two trains were run by East Midlands Railway, a private operator whose contract expires in October. The Labour government plans to return the service to public ownership at that time. Network Rail, the publicly owned company that replaced Railtrack in 2002, manages signalling and track.

Railtrack collapsed after the Hatfield derailment killed four people in 2000. Since the Potters Bar derailment killed seven passengers in 2002, no incident has caused more than one passenger death. In most years there have been no rail fatalities at all.

Railways receive several billion pounds in annual subsidies. Decisions on future safety spending will determine how costs are shared between passengers and taxpayers.
