Kean last voted on March 5. Wilson told allies during a phone call that she plans to run for reelection, Axios reported. During her absence she missed a major vote on extending Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act surveillance authorities. She has also not appeared in any footage from hearings held by the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure or the House Committee on Education and Workforce.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said Wilson was recovering from a procedure and would be back shortly. In April, Kean stated he was dealing with a personal medical issue and would return soon, though he provided no additional details. House Speaker Mike Johnson said in April that Kean would be back to 100 percent very soon, The New York Times reported.
Kean has not been seen on the campaign trail while running for reelection in a competitive district. Four Democrats are competing for the seat in New Jersey’s seventh district, where a primary is scheduled for June 2. The district flipped to Republicans in 2022 due to redistricting but leans slightly Democratic in voter registration.
Republican New Jersey Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew said they kept reaching out to Kean out of concern but received radio silence. National Republican Congressional Committee chair Richard Hudson told Politico he had not spoken to Kean in a while and did not know his location.
Kean’s consultant, Harrison Neely, told Politico that Kean would run for reelection. Wilson’s and Kean’s offices did not respond to requests for comment.
Wilson has not been recorded at any sessions of the two House committees on which she serves. Kean has been absent from both voting and campaign activities in a district viewed as competitive for the upcoming midterm elections. The contrast between their absences and their decisions to seek new terms has drawn public attention.
Party leaders from both sides have addressed the absences by citing health-related reasons without providing further medical details. Colleagues who attempted contact reported receiving no response over a period of weeks. Both members continue to be listed as candidates in their respective primaries.
