A driver and passenger who recorded themselves exceeding 130 mph in a 30 mph zone were sentenced at Manchester Crown Court for causing the death of a pedestrian. The 20-year-old driver received 11 years and eight months for causing death by dangerous driving. The 23-year-old passenger, owner of the vehicle, received 12 years and nine months for aiding and abetting the same offense.

Abayomi had entered the road on a green light while walking to work. The pair had filmed themselves inhaling nitrous oxide from a balloon, running red lights, and weaving through traffic. After the collision, an Apple Watch automatically alerted emergency services; the pair discussed calling an Uber and reporting the car stolen.

The driver admitted causing death by dangerous driving, causing death by driving while uninsured, and failing to provide a specimen. The passenger later admitted aiding and abetting both dangerous driving and driving while uninsured. The judge described the conduct as sustained, deliberate, and terrifying.

Greater Manchester Police called the case one of the most extreme examples of dangerous driving officers had encountered and noted it was among the first nationally in which a passenger was convicted for aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving.

The victim's partner stated he was an ordinary hard-working man who should have returned home safely.
