nypost.comTwo U.S. Navy EA-18G Growler jets collided in midair during a performance at the Gunfighter Skies air show at Mountain Home Air Force Base on Sunday. The base is located about 50 miles southeast of Boise, Idaho. Officials said all four crew members ejected safely and are in stable condition.
The collision occurred during the first air show at the base since 2018. In that year, a civilian pilot died after his hang glider struck the ground during a performance. The 2018 event was dedicated to the pilot after the accident.
Video recorded by a spectator shows the two aircraft appearing to make contact before spinning downward and striking the ground in a fireball. Officials said visibility was good and winds were gusting up to 29 mph at the time. Each jet is a variant of the F/A-18 Super Hornet and costs roughly $67 million.
The base was placed on lockdown after the crash and the remainder of the air show was canceled. Officials said the cause of the collision is under investigation.
Base has experienced prior aviation accidents. In 2003, a U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aircraft struck the ground during a maneuver but the pilot ejected safely. Officials said the 2018 death of the civilian pilot led to the suspension of air shows at the base for eight years.
