Two nonprofit organizations are coordinating the largest public events marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. America250 operates as the nonprofit arm of the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission, a body created by Congress in 2016.

The commission is led by eight lawmakers from both parties and a board of private citizens that includes former U.S. Treasurer Rosie Rios. Freedom 250 was established through an executive order signed by President Donald Trump early in his second term.

The organization functions as a public-private partnership and is chaired by the president, with Vice President JD Vance serving as vice chair.

Several musicians scheduled to appear at Freedom 250’s Great American State Fair on the National Mall in late June withdrew this week. ” Country singer Martina McBride stated she had been assured the event would celebrate all 50 states in a nonpartisan manner.

The commission that oversees the group must submit annual reports to Congress detailing its finances. Freedom 250 does not publish a full donor list. It has named John Deere and Northrop Grumman as strategic partners. Last year’s federal spending legislation allocated $150 million for 250th-anniversary activities, with the Interior Department responsible for distributing the funds.

Democratic senators, including Sen. Adam Schiff, sent a March letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum questioning whether federal and private funds could be commingled and whether the department has authority to allocate the money.

250 is producing the Great American State Fair in June, the Salute to America fireworks on July 4, and the Patriot Games fitness competition later this year. America250’s schedule of events has not yet been detailed in public announcements.
