Two Sudanese Women Die in Channel Boat; 400+ Migrants Reach UK; Bristol Explosion Kills Two
Two Sudanese women suffocated on a small boat carrying 82 people that ran aground near Neufchatel-Hardelot in northern France on Sunday. Despite the deaths, at least 400 migrants crossed the English Channel on the same day, with 597 arrivals in the UK over the past week. Separately, a suspicious explosion at a house in Bristol killed a man and a woman, injuring three others.
GB NewsTwo young Sudanese women aged around 20 suffocated to death on Sunday while attempting to cross the English Channel from northern France in a small boat crammed with more than 80 people, including pregnant women and children. The boat, carrying 82 people, set out to sea south of the town of Neufchatel-Hardelot during the night from Saturday to Sunday, but the engine would not start and it began to drift.
Seventeen people were rescued at sea and taken to Boulogne-sur-Mer, while the boat with the remaining 65 people ran aground on a beach near Neufchatel-Hardelot, where the two women were found dead inside.
The women did not drown and most likely died from suffocation, as often happens in overcrowded vessels, according to Christophe Marx, secretary-general of the Pas-de-Calais prefecture. Three other people suffered serious wounds, including chemical burns due to a mixture of fuel and seawater, and 14 people sustained moderate injuries, with five of them taken to hospital.
A pregnant woman was in critical condition, and one victim was described as a 16-year-old child and another a 20-year-old woman, according to migrant aid group Utopia 56.
The rescued people are being treated and interviewed by border police to determine who is responsible for the crossing. m. This marks the third such tragedy in just over a month: on April 1, 2026, two migrants died off the coast of Gravelines in northern France, and on April 9, 2026, two men and two women died near the village of Equihen-Plage, swept away by the currents.
In 2025, at least 29 migrants died at sea in the region, according to an AFP tally based on official French and British sources. Despite the deaths, migrant crossings continued unabated. m.
The occupants of six migrant dinghies were taken to Dover harbour in Kent, and more than 360 migrants arrived at the Border Force processing centre in Dover harbour on Saturday, following 55 arrivals on Friday. Government figures show 597 migrants in six small boats arrived in the UK over the past seven days, bringing the total number of illegal arrivals for the year so far to over 7,200.
Close to 71,000 illegal migrants have arrived since Sir Keir Starmer became Prime Minister.
In 2025, 41,472 people reached the UK in small boats, the second-highest figure since large-scale crossings were first detected in 2018. The number of arrivals in Britain so far this year has been drastically cut from 2025, according to French officials.
The UK and France signed a new three-year £662 million deal in April 2026 to stop undocumented migrants making the risky journey across the Channel in small boats.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed the agreement a little more than a week before the incident. The deal will see riot-trained police sent to beaches in France and includes France deploying drones, helicopters, and a camera system worth millions of pounds to intercept people smugglers and illegal migrants.
Under the deal, France pledged to increase law enforcement personnel on the coast by more than half, reaching 1,400 officers by 2029, up from around 700 to 1,100 initially.
The UK will hand over £501 million to cover five police units and enforcement activity on French beaches, with an extra £160 million paid only if new tactics to curb Channel crossings succeed; the additional funding will stop after a year if efforts fail.
Ministers have not set specific targets to measure the success of the deal. A Home Office spokesperson said over 42,000 illegal migrants have been stopped from attempting to cross the Channel since the election, and almost 60,000 people who were here illegally have been removed or deported.
Shabana Mahmood stated that the extra security resources on French beaches will impact the activities of the criminal gangs. In a separate incident in the UK, two people died in an explosion at a house in Bristol. Avon and Somerset Police were called to the house in Sterncourt Road, Frenchay, for a domestic-related incident minutes before the explosion happened at about 06:30 BST on May 3, 2026.
A man and a woman died in the blast, which police described as suspicious but not treated as a terrorist incident. Three people—a man, a woman, and a child—were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Police declared a major incident, cordoned off the area, and evacuated nearby residents.
There was no significant damage to other properties, and specialist searches were conducted by the British Army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal as a precaution. Officers were carrying out inquiries at a property in Speedwell, Bristol, linked to the man who died, according to Supt Matt Ebbs.
Police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident, and they will reduce the cordon as soon as possible, with it remaining in place as a precaution.
Avon and Somerset Police are working with Bristol City Council to support evacuated residents and asked people to avoid the area. Bradley Shepherd, a resident on Bradeston Grove, heard a large explosion noise at about the time emergency services were called. Emergency services arrived within 10 minutes, and armed police were present within minutes.
Residents were instructed to evacuate to the local Harvester restaurant within 15 to 20 minutes of the cordon and were moved to the Begbrook Social Club at about 12:30 BST.
