Typhoon Bavi makes landfall in eastern China, cancels thousands of flights

Typhoon Bavi made landfall in eastern China on Saturday night, the second major storm to hit the country in a week. , then again near Wenzhou around midnight, with maximum sustained winds of 108–117 km/h. m. Saturday, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Shanghai’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports cancelled over 650 flights, about 30 per cent of capacity, while Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport cancelled 296 flights on Sunday before planning to resume service after noon.

Evacuations and transport impact More than 2.4 million people were evacuated from areas in the storm’s path. Two of the four main train stations in Hangzhou cancelled all services for the day, and additional routes were suspended. The storm spans roughly 1,000 km at its widest point.

Officials lowered alerts further south as Bavi began to weaken and move north. No fatalities or severe injuries have been reported, but 113 people were injured.
