Typhoon Bavi Strengthens to 185 km/h Winds Far East of Philippines

Super Typhoon Bavi reached maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and gusts up to 230 km/h by 8 pm on July 3, 2026, according to PAGASA data cited by Rappler. The storm had strengthened from 150 km/h winds recorded at 3 pm the same day. PAGASA upgraded Bavi to super typhoon status once winds hit the 185 km/h threshold.
The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that Bavi underwent explosive intensification over the preceding 12 hours. At 8 pm, the center was located 3,090 km east of Eastern Visayas and moving west at 20 km/h. Rappler reported that PAGASA said Bavi may enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday, July 8.
Upon entry it will receive the local name Inday. Forecasts remain uncertain while the system stays far from the PAR. PAGASA warned that Bavi could pass close to Northern Luzon and possibly head toward Taiwan.
The agency noted that tropical cyclone wind signals could be raised over portions of Northern Luzon and Central Luzon even if the storm does not make landfall. Bavi is expected to enhance the southwest monsoon, or habagat, with significant rainfall possible starting July 9. Rappler cited PAGASA statements that floods and landslides are likely under those conditions.
The weather bureau compared the potential track and monsoon effects to those of Super Typhoon Carina, also known as Gaemi, which made landfall in Taiwan in July 2024 and still produced widespread flooding across parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila.
