Typhoon Inday Downgraded from Super Typhoon over Philippine Sea

Typhoon Inday (Bavi) was downgraded from a super typhoon to a typhoon before dawn on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Rappler reported that the storm’s maximum sustained winds fell to 175 km/h, with gusts reaching 215 km/h, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration. At 4 a.m.

The typhoon was located 925 kilometers east of Northern Luzon and moved west-northwest at 20 km/h. It is expected to pass nearest to extreme Northern Luzon by Friday evening or Saturday morning before heading toward Japan’s southern islands and Taiwan’s northern coast. Batanes faces a forecast of 50-100 mm of rain on Friday.

On Thursday, Inday may bring rain with gusty winds to Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Norte, Aurora, and Catanduanes. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are also possible across the rest of Bicol and Eastern Visayas. The enhanced southwest monsoon is forecast to produce scattered rain and thunderstorms in Mimaropa, Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Lanao del Norte, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, and South Cotabato on Thursday.

Isolated showers or thunderstorms may affect the rest of Mindanao and Central Visayas. Signal No. 1 is in effect as of 5 a.m. Thursday in Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Isabela, the northeastern part of Quirino, Apayao, northern Abra, Kalinga, eastern Mountain Province, eastern Ifugao, Ilocos Norte, northern Aurora, and northern and central Catanduanes.

The highest signal expected remains Signal No. 2. Inday is the Philippines’ ninth tropical cyclone of 2026 and the second in July. It could exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday and reach China by Sunday.
