U.K. Forces Board Russian Shadow Fleet Tanker in English Channel

British Royal Marine Commandos boarded and seized a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker in the English Channel on Sunday. The six-hour operation took place in the early hours and involved navy vessels including the frigate HMS Sutherland, heavy-lift Chinook helicopters, and additional aircraft.

Royal Marine Commandos fast-roped onto the crude carrier Smyros and were joined by specially trained officers from the National Crime Agency.

Ministry of Defense described the action as the first U.K.-led boarding of its kind. The ministry statement said the vessel was boarded "despite Russia's best efforts to evade sanctions and continue fueling its barbaric war with Ukraine." The captured tanker is now anchored off the south coast of England under heavy guard and surveillance. Investigations are continuing.

Russia's shadow fleet consists of aging tankers that frequently switch registries and disable tracking systems to bypass Western sanctions. The ships are banned from U.K. ports and services. France has conducted several similar interdictions in recent months, but this marks the first such U.K.-led operation in the English Channel.
