U.K. Sets Social Media Age Limits for Under-16s and AI Chatbots
Legislation will bar under-16s from user-to-user platforms and require AI romantic-companion services to set an 18-year minimum. The rules are scheduled to take effect by spring 2027 after final drafting.
forbes.comOfficials introduced legislation on Monday that will prohibit children under 16 from accessing user-to-user social media platforms. The measure follows the model adopted in Australia last year and is expected to be finalized for a formal launch in spring 2027.
Messaging services such as WhatsApp are not covered by the ban. The platforms affected include those whose primary purpose is social interaction and that allow users to post material alongside algorithmic recommendations.
Media regulator Ofcom stated that it has already driven widespread age checks and grooming protections, but added that industry must go further to ensure safety. Details of how the age limits will be verified and enforced will be developed by the regulator.
The same legislation will require AI romantic-companion chatbots designed to simulate sexual relationships or roleplay to enforce a minimum user age of 18. Officials described the rules as world-leading action on online safety. Parents want to keep their kids safe and happy, but the online world has made that harder than ever.
I've heard firsthand from families crying out for change and we will do right by them. This is a line in the sand.
