The Trump administration’s Freedom250 project will launch more than 850,000 fireworks shells on Saturday across 10 sites around the Lincoln Memorial and Potomac River. The display is scheduled to begin at 10:30 p.m. and last 40 minutes.
The event marks the United States’ 250th birthday. Pennsylvania-based contractor Pyrotecnico was hired to carry out the launch. The planned total exceeds the current Guinness World Record of approximately 810,000 shells set in Bocaue, Philippines in 2016.
Organizers have described the display as roughly 50 times larger than Washington’s usual annual fireworks show. Freedom250 will include performances, flyovers and acrobatics displays at the National Mall. Organizers have not disclosed the cost of the display.
