Additional private health records from UK Biobank volunteers have appeared on the Chinese website Alibaba, following an initial data breach, according to The Guardian. The Guardian reported that Patrick Vallance, the UK science minister, addressed a House of Lords debate on April 28, 2026, regarding the attempted sale of data from 500,000 volunteers.
Vallance stated that the UK government has worked with Chinese officials to remove the postings. "New listings will emerge – there have been additional listings posted since the government were made aware of the issue last week – and we continue to work with the Chinese government to remove them quickly," Vallance said, as quoted in The Guardian.
The data is de-identified, excluding names, addresses, or precise dates of birth, with Vallance noting a low probability of re-identification, per The Guardian. "It is increasingly possible to triangulate in large datasets and get close to identification, and that remains a very real risk," Vallance added in the report.
The Guardian noted that last month, it re-identified a single participant in a different UK Biobank dataset using date of birth and operation data. Ian Murray, the UK technology minister, made an emergency statement on Thursday revealing that half a million participants had their health data offered for sale on Alibaba, according to The Guardian.
UK Biobank learned of the breach from an anonymous whistleblower, the report stated.
The three Chinese institutions behind the postings are Second Xiangya hospital, China-Japan Union hospital, and Beijing Chaoyang hospital, according to Vallance in The Guardian. Dr. Luc Rocher, a researcher at the Oxford Internet Institute, said UK Biobank has taken action on at least 30 other data breaches in the past month, as reported in The Guardian.
Rocher noted that a detailed dataset relating to 96,000 volunteers was accidentally uploaded by a master's student at Yale University. "I’m astounded that that data is still available online," Rocher said, per The Guardian. Chi Onwurah, chair of the Commons science, innovation and technology committee, stated: "UK Biobank have been complacent about the half million British people who have shared their most intimate and personal data with them and who deserve better than this," as quoted in The Guardian.
All access to UK Biobank data has been temporarily suspended, according to the report.
In Mali, Tuareg rebels have demanded that Russian fighters withdraw from the country, according to Al Jazeera. Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), told AFP: "Our objective is for Russia’s Africa Corps to withdraw permanently," as reported in Al Jazeera.
Ramadane visited Paris to meet French security and defence officials, the report stated. "We have no particular problem with Russia, nor with any other country. Our problem is with the regime that governs Bamako," Ramadane said, per Al Jazeera. He added that rebels viewed Russia’s intervention negatively because they supported people who committed serious crimes and massacres.
Assimi Goita’s government seized power in a coup in 2020, according to Al Jazeera. A rebel alliance launched a coordinated offensive in multiple cities on Saturday, the report noted. Mali’s defense minister Sadio Camara was killed in an assault on his home in Kati near Bamako, as stated in Al Jazeera.
The Malian government said Camara was killed by a car bomb driven by a suicide bomber, per the report. Camara’s funeral is scheduled for Thursday at 10am (09:00 GMT).
Russian fighters were seen driving out of Kidal in trucks after negotiating an exit through Algerian mediation, according to Al Jazeera. Ramadane said the Russians were escorted to Anefis southwest of Kidal. Russia’s Ministry of Defence stated that the withdrawal from Kidal was a decision by the Malian government, as reported in Al Jazeera.
"Units in Kidal fought for more than 24 hours and repelled four massive attacks," the ministry said. Assimi Goita stated on Tuesday evening that military operations would continue until the armed groups were neutralised, per Al Jazeera.
Malian forces are back in control of Menaka near the Niger border, according to Al Jazeera. Fighters with the ISIL affiliate in Sahel Province (ISSP) retreated after clashes with the army in Menaka, the report stated. Military presence was reported in Mali’s central Mopti region and in Gao.
Tensions remained high in the central town of Sevare, per Al Jazeera. The rebels intend to take control of Gao, Timbuktu, and Menaka following the capture of Kidal, Ramadane said. Mali's military leader declared the situation is under control a day before the Tuareg rebels' vow, according to France 24, which reported Tuareg rebels vowing that the Mali junta will fall.
