U.S. Accepts 5,948 South African Refugees This Fiscal Year
The State Department reports that nearly all refugees admitted so far this year are from South Africa. The figure follows a presidential memo that set a 7,500-person annual cap and directed priority to Afrikaners.

The State Department’s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration recorded 5,948 refugee admissions for the year to date, all from South Africa. The total covers the period through early June 2026. A presidential memo dated September 30 directed that refugee slots be allocated primarily to Afrikaners from South Africa.
The memo also set the annual ceiling at 7,500, down from the prior year’s 125,000 limit.
Bureau figures extending back to October show 6,668 refugees accepted in the first seven months of fiscal 2026. All but three originated from South Africa; the exceptions were three Afghans resettled in Colorado in November.
Administration officials have described white South Africans as facing unjust racial discrimination and have cited farm attacks as evidence. ” A presidential determination dated May 21 proposes raising the annual refugee ceiling by 10,000 to accommodate additional South African admissions.
