U.S. Airstrikes Hit 90 Targets in Iran on July 9

The U.S. military conducted airstrikes on 90 targets in Iran on July 9, 2026. Central Command released black-and-white footage showing strikes on an airport runway and missile launchers. Iran’s Health Ministry reported that the attacks killed at least 14 people and wounded 78 others, most of them members of the armed forces.

State media reported explosions at a railway bridge in Golestan province and two bridges on the route to Mashhad. Iran fired missiles and drones at Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar. Sirens sounded at least three times in Bahrain and once in Kuwait, while alerts activated in Qatar and Jordan.

Kuwait shot down three ballistic missiles, one cruise missile and 10 drones; falling debris wounded one person. Bahrain said it shot down incoming fire, and Jordan intercepted all projectiles directed at its territory. An Iranian official accused the United States of striking near the nuclear power plant in Bushehr around noon.

Iranian state media reported that Revolutionary Guard units fired missiles at a U.S. base in Jordan. President Trump stated that the strikes were retribution for Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz the previous day.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Trump’s remarks reflected “an admission of the failure” of U.S. policy. The exchanges occurred on the same day that the funeral procession for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei concluded at the Imam Reza shrine in Mashhad.

Khamenei was killed in the opening moments of the war that began on February 28, 2026. His coffin was carried through crowds outside the Imam Hussein Shrine in Karbala, Iraq, earlier in the day. Maritime data showed 576 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz in June 2026, up from 233 in May but well below the 3,100 transits recorded in June 2025.

The waterway carries a significant share of global oil and natural gas shipments.
