U.S. Army Cancels Planned Armored Brigade Rotation to Poland Amid Troop Adjustments in Europe

The Pentagon on May 14 halted the scheduled nine-month rotational deployment of an Armored Brigade Combat Team to Poland, with part of the unit already in country. The move follows the Trump administration's decision earlier this month to withdraw roughly 5,000 troops from Germany, including the 2nd Cavalry Regiment.

U.S. Army armored brigade to Poland on Wednesday, an Army official confirmed on May 14. The canceled rotational deployment of an Armored Brigade Combat Team was expected to last nine months to replace the previous unit.

A portion of the Armored Brigade Combat Team had already arrived in Poland before the deployment was canceled. The cancellation follows the Trump administration's decision earlier this month to withdraw approximately 5,000 American troops from Germany. The drawdown will impact the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, the only forward-stationed Stryker Brigade Combat Team on the continent.

The planned deployment of a newly activated long-range fires battalion of the Europe-based 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force was also canceled. The New York Times reported on May 14 that internal planning for the drawdowns may still be ongoing. A net reduction of 5,000 troops might be spread across Poland, Germany, and other European countries.

The Trump administration announced it would withdraw roughly 5,000 troops over the next six to 12 months from Germany. The withdrawal from Germany followed a spat between President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the war with Iran. The administration ended the rotational Infantry Brigade Combat Team deployment to Romania last fall.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States had generally maintained at least four Brigade Combat Teams in Europe. Those four Brigade Combat Teams consisted of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, the 173rd Airborne Brigade, the rotational ABCT in Poland, and a rotational IBCT in Romania and surrounding countries. The rotational ABCTs in Poland regularly train in the Baltics.

The 2nd Cavalry Regiment has been a mainstay of American combat power in Europe since the Cold War. The 173rd Airborne Brigade is headquartered in Italy. FDD reported that the cumulative impact of these successive drawdowns could bring America’s military force posture on the continent closer to pre-2022 levels.

If the 2nd Cavalry Regiment is withdrawn from Germany and the rotational ABCT deployments to Poland are ended, the United States would retain only a single Brigade Combat Team with no large armored or mechanized combat formations on the continent. The 2nd Multi-Domain Task Force would also be substantially weaker without its organic long-range fires capabilities.

U.S. Troop levels in Europe from dropping below 76,000. FDD reported that if the administration does not reverse these decisions, Congress should ensure compliance with the law and craft additional legislation to protect the combat formations and capabilities most needed to deter Russia.
