U.S. Bars Somali Referee From 2026 World Cup Over Alleged Terror Links Despite Valid Visa

The United States denied entry to Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan on June 10 despite his valid visa, citing alleged links to suspected members of terror organizations, the Trump administration stated. FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressed the denial at a launch press conference in Mexico City the same day. "FIFA is not the kings of the world" when it comes to entry decisions, he said.

He added that the organization is working to find solutions on visa issues but cannot override government decisions. The 2026 World Cup begins Thursday, June 11, with the United States, Canada, and Mexico as co-hosts. The tournament features 48 nations and 104 matches.

Infantino also defended ticket pricing. FIFA set the starting price at $140. Regular seats for the July 19 final in New Jersey were initially priced up to $8,680, then raised to $10,990 and later to $32,970.

After criticism, FIFA offered a limited number of $60 tickets to national federations. Infantino said the average ticket price for the tournament is under $500. " He pointed to high resale prices for the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs as evidence that the secondary market operates beyond FIFA's control.

Infantino said he was unconcerned about investigations by attorneys general in California, New Jersey, New York, and Texas. "We welcome every investigation," he said. U.S. has defended its visa decisions affecting officials and fans ahead of the tournament.
