The Gordie Howe International Bridge will open for crossings by the end of July after U.S. and Canadian officials resolved outstanding issues that had delayed the original June opening. A ribbon-cutting ceremony had been scheduled for June 12 but was postponed indefinitely to allow time for Washington and Ottawa to address a dispute.
Multiple reports on Friday indicated the issues had been settled, though an official ceremony date has not been released.
Bridge details and trade role The 1.5-mile crossing spans the Detroit River with a half-mile cable-stayed section that will be the longest of its kind in North America. Roughly one-quarter of all trade between the two countries passes through the Detroit-Windsor gateway.
The bridge has been under construction since 2018. Canada agreed to finance the $4.4 billion project, and Canada and Michigan will jointly own the completed span.
