U.S. Census Data Show All Midwest States Gained Population From July 2024 to July 2025
U.S. Census Bureau data show all twelve states in the region posted gains while coastal housing costs remain far higher. Families cite lower home prices and reduced financial stress as reasons for relocating.
citizen.co.zaU.S. Census Bureau data show every state in the Midwest recorded population growth between July 2024 and July 2025. The region includes Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
David Silverman and Lauren Silverman moved from Los Angeles to Cleveland, Ohio, before the birth of their child in 2022. They said the lower cost of housing made the decision possible. "Moving here was kind of like an exhale, like we suddenly felt like it wasn't so stressful to live," Lauren Silverman told ABC News.
David Silverman said the change created a different sense of daily life. "You just feel that mobility in your life out here that you don't feel back out west," he said. A median-priced home in the Cleveland area costs about $237,000, according to the National Association of Realtors.
In nearby Akron the median is about $226,000. The national median stands at about $419,000. Redfin chief economist Daryl Fairweather said a household income of $68,000 is required to afford the monthly mortgage on a median-priced home in Cleveland.
The same calculation for New York requires more than $200,000. Realtor Katie Madio, who moved from California and now works in Ohio, said she sees buyers from Texas, California, and Florida arriving weekly. "I am seeing out-of-state buyers move to the area weekly," Madio said.
Lauren Silverman said the move now fits her family's needs. "At a different phase in my life, Ohio did not have much to offer for me, but as a mother now, and with a family, it's the only place I'd want to be," she said.
