U.S. Central Command began launching additional strikes against Iran on July 8. The action targets coastal radar sites and anti-ship missile locations to degrade Iran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The United States is holding Iran accountable for recent unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews in a vital international waterway, the command said in a statement. The latest strikes are bigger in scope than those conducted the previous night, which hit more than 80 targets, according to a U.S. official.
Explosions were reported near Bandar Abbas and Sirik. -Israeli strikes targeting military, government and infrastructure sites. U.S. and Iranian delegations entered negotiations last month aimed at a war-ending deal based on a memorandum of understanding.
The two sides exchanged limited strikes in late June despite the talks. Iran has shot down at least 30 Reaper drones since the start of the war, a U.S. official said.
