A retired South African Air Force brigadier general was sentenced last month in the United States to six months in jail and a fine after pleading guilty to acting as an agent for South Africa and submitting false information on a security clearance application.

Court documents state she received cash payments and a laptop from a South African State Security Agency official linked to the embassy in Washington, DC, and reported on events she attended.
The plea agreement shows the officer admitted following instructions from the State Security Agency official in exchange for payments. She also acknowledged trying to conceal contact with the official, identified in documents as IO-1. Daily Maverick reported on 8 July 2026 that the officer is originally from Johannesburg.
It is unclear what has happened to the State Security Agency official. Government spokespersons did not respond to requests for comment by Thursday afternoon.
