The Drug Enforcement Administration has warned that nitazenes, synthetic opioids stronger than fentanyl, are appearing in the illicit drug supply. These substances were originally developed as painkillers but were never approved for medical use. Prescription opioids gave way to heroin, which was later replaced by fentanyl in many markets.
Expanded Access to Reversal Medication The U.S.
Food and Drug Administration approved over-the-counter naloxone in 2023. Distribution programs for the overdose reversal drug have expanded in emergency departments and community settings. Studies published in The Lancet and JAMA have linked wider naloxone availability to lower overdose mortality rates at the community level. Officials credit these measures with saving tens of thousands of lives.
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health report that nearly one-third of American adults know someone who died from a drug overdose. Nearly one in five say the person was a close friend or family member. Dr. James Flowers, founder of J.
Flowers Health Institute, said the epidemic exposed vulnerabilities already present in American society. He described the crisis as a convergence of psychiatric distress, loneliness, chronic stress, family breakdown, and uneven access to care. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has stated that addiction is a chronic, relapsing medical condition.
Long-term recovery typically requires sustained medical, psychological, and social support that remains unevenly available across the country.
