Two U.S.-based organizations will send 150 participants to Cuba for two weeks in August. The trip is organized to mark the late Fidel Castro's 100th birthday and includes meetings with local figures, labor activities, and delivery of supplies. Participants will also receive briefings on Cuba's economic policies, anti-racism efforts, and overseas medical programs.
The administration has imposed economic and national security sanctions on Cuba. A May indictment targeted Castro's brother, and officials have discussed a possible change in U.S. policy toward the island. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sanctioned the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples and its travel agency in early June.
Rubio stated that the Cuban government has conducted political and ideological campaigns against the United States.
