U.S. imposes visa restrictions on Tigray hardliners and their families
The United States on 23 June 2026 restricted visas for hardliners in the Tigray People's Liberation Front and their families. Tigray Democratic Solidarity Party official Almaz Gebretsadik welcomed the step and urged an end to forced recruitment and alliances with foreign actors.

The United States imposed visa restrictions on 23 June 2026 targeting hardliners of the Tigray People's Liberation Front and their immediate families. AllAfrica reported the measure through the Ethiopian News Agency. Almaz Gebretsadik, Secretariat Head of the Tigray Democratic Solidarity Party, said the restrictions send an unequivocal message to the TPLF to cease hostile and destabilizing activities.
She added that the step will support full implementation of the Pretoria Cessation of Hostilities Agreement. Gebretsadik stated that an extremist TPLF faction has conducted large-scale forced recruitment of youth under an unlawfully enacted regional mobilization decree. She said many young people who refuse are fleeing the region for Addis Ababa and other safer areas.
She described the faction's operations under a project called Tsimdo in alliance with hostile foreign forces. Gebretsadik urged Tigray youth to say "enough is enough" to leaders she said are compromising their future to retain power. She called on other political organizations to set aside differences and form a unified front against the trajectory.
