U.S. and Iran Exchange Strikes After Ceasefire Ends

A ceasefire reached after earlier U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran collapsed this week. Officials in Washington said Iran violated the agreement by firing on ships. Iranian officials said the United States broke the section of the memorandum that barred new sanctions and additional regional deployments.

Tehran's health ministry said the American strikes killed 17 people and injured 115 others. Iran responded by launching attacks on U.S.-allied Gulf countries that host American bases. Pakistan's prime minister urged both sides to protect the recent truce during calls with Qatar's emir and Iran's president.

Iranian officials said the Strait of Hormuz would now carry passage fees, a move Washington rejected as inconsistent with its status as an international waterway.
