U.S. and Iran Agree on Framework for Nuclear Limits and Sanctions Relief

The United States and Iran have agreed on a framework for a peace deal to end months of fighting in the Middle East, Pakistan’s prime minister said Saturday. An electronic signing is expected within 24 hours, with Pakistan preparing to host the ceremony. Technical-level talks between the two sides are scheduled to begin immediately after the signing.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Friday that the terms for addressing Iran’s nuclear program would be finalized within 60 days of the initial signing. An administration official said the emerging agreement would begin the process of destroying or removing Tehran’s highly enriched uranium stored under three nuclear sites.
The same official said the 60-day period would be used to work out technical details for the removal.
The deal includes provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Abbas Araghchi said Iran wants a deal that allows Tehran to charge ships for services rendered when they transit the strait. Three regional officials said the emerging deal is also expected to include the phased lifting of sanctions on Iran and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
Iran has insisted that any deal must also include a ceasefire in Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned Friday that Israel could still act independently toward Iran and would not withdraw from zones it occupies in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. Fighting continued in southern Lebanon on Saturday.
The Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for about 20 locations in southern Lebanon including Nabatieh. The Lebanese army withdrew its troops from a base in Kfar Tebnit after Israeli troops advanced nearby. U.S. Forces downed several Iranian drones targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
The command said the strait remains open for transit after the incident. A tanker was struck by an unknown projectile six nautical miles east of Oman on Friday, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.
