Trump Says US-Iran Memorandum of Understanding Complete, Authorizes Hormuz Opening

The United States and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding intended to end fighting that began in late February 2026 and to open the Strait of Hormuz for shipping. President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social on Sunday that the war with Iran was concluding with a deal.

“The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete,” he wrote. An hour later he added that the Strait of Hormuz would open on Friday upon the deal’s signing for purposes of mine removal. The administration released the text of the document after journalists obtained draft copies.

President Trump stated at the G7 summit on Wednesday that the document is a memorandum of understanding. “And if I don’t like it, we’ll go back to shooting at them, dropping bombs on their head,” he said. President Trump held a news conference on the agreement on Wednesday and met with G7 leaders after the memorandum was secured.

He also held a one-on-one meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the summit.

U.S. intelligence agencies recently determined that Iran can now shut down the Strait of Hormuz at will. U.S. warplanes bombed Tehran on February 28, killing 120 schoolchildren. Ben Shapiro demanded the release of the full text of the Iran memorandum of understanding. Senator Lindsey Graham posted that every nuclear deal with Iran must be sent to Congress for review and a vote.

Trump said the memorandum is “fair” and denied that the United States will invest “any money” in Iran. He warned that “all hell will rain down” if Iran tries to get a nuclear weapon. The deal is reported to relieve energy markets, though energy flows are expected to remain months away from full restoration.

No publicly released evidence has documented whether the memorandum includes provisions for a $300 billion investment fund for Tehran.
